Sunday Thought – Sunday 14th May 2017

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” Mark 6:31

So often, life can get the better of us, it crowds us in and demands far more than we able to give. We get worn down at times, and it does not only affect us in bodily tiredness, but can also send our health on a downward spiral. I am sure I am talking to many this morning who can relate to this, because it’s something that affects us all at one time or other.

If we are a true Christian, it not only takes it’s bodily toll on us but also can drain us spiritually. The big problem for us is admitting it! We don’t like to portray signs of weakness as Christians, we want everybody to see us as OVERCOMERS. Some even like to be seen as SUPA-CHRISTIANS, a self image where nothing of this world can ever get us down or make us weaker. But all of this is just a part of our human ego, and if we are really honest, not just with others but with ourselves also, we have to admit we can be brought low.

Jesus knew all about our weaknesses as human beings. For although He was rightfully God, He also became truly man.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” Philippians 2: 5-7

Jesus Himself knew what it was to be tired and weary and he certainly knew what it was like to suffer pain.

In our opening text, Jesus saw that the disciples were tired and weary. They had just returned from their preaching and ministering expedition, related to us in verses 7-13 of the same chapter. Then, after hearing of the death of John the Baptist, they had collected his body and gave him a proper burial. They were tired and weary, duties had taken their toll, and our precious Saviour Jesus saw this, and knew they needed rest.

Come ye yourselves apart….and rest a while” Our Lord told His disciples.

There are times when He says those words to us also. Are you tuned in to hear His voice? A couple of weeks ago I sent out a Sunday Thought on the subject of HEALING and mentioned that Jesus doesn’t always heal. I thank those who responded to that with positive comments.

I mention this because this is one of the reasons we don’t receive the healing we seek. Jesus allows us to become sick and weak in body SO THAT WE HAVE TO TAKE OUR REST.

The pressures of this life are many, and especially so in Christian service. Please take a look and compare these two verses:

Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” Galatians 6:2

For every man shall bear his own burden” Galatians 6:5

On the face of it you may think it looks like a contradiction, but God NEVER contradicts Himself! In the first verse (Gal.6:2) the word BURDEN means just that. It means A LOAD, A WEIGHT…we are to help others carry the weight of their load that often they cannot escape from.

In the second verse (Gal. 6:5) the word BURDEN means a TASK or SERVICE. They are different Greek words. We all have our various GOD GIVEN TASKS and OUR SERVICE FOR HIM that nobody else can do in our place.

So, we need to carry, conscientiously, the burden of our GOD GIVEN WORK but at the same time, help others carry the WEIGHT of their LOAD, that may be bringing them down low. None of us are exempt from obedience to what God is saying here. May our Lord search our hearts that we may do His divine will in these matters and rest a while, when we need to.

Love in Christ to you all…..Pastor Keith
