An Open Letter To America's Leaders

An Open Letter to America’s Leaders

I would like to share some of the concerns I have with you over the state of our nation, and the polarization issue that is being brought up so often.

First, let me say that I try to look deeply into the big picture of why we are here, and, I try to measure the true value of what we do with our lives. I do this with the same standard that almost all of our forefathers used. Of course, that is the Bible.

I believe that our country is headed for disastrous times. Our constitution was written by men who had a solid, Biblical foundation under them. We no longer are operating from the same platform that they operated from. Many are familiar with this quote:

"I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there; in her fertile fields and boundless prairies, and it was not there; in her rich mines and her vast world commerce, and it was not there. Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good. And if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great." Alexis deTocqueville

It distresses me greatly that we can no longer say that America is good. The truth is that America has jettisoned what made her good: A healthy fear and respect for her Creator. I am 45 years old and I became a Christian at the age of 32. I didn’t grow up in church. In a lot of ways, I believe that has been a plus. Christianity in our day is a borderline cult, compared to what the puritans and reformers taught. I’m afraid they would not consider what we have as being true Christianity. I myself feel like it is a broad road version of Christianity, and Jesus assured us that those on that road would hear “depart from Me, I never knew you”.

The Biblical illiteracy in our country is astounding. The lack of authority that we give to God’s word is also astounding. As a nation, we want God’s blessings but we fail to recognize that those blessings come with obedience. Let me touch on two examples:

  1. Our nation is bending over backwards to try and cater to the homosexual agenda. Let me say adamantly that I personally have no ill will toward those who are homosexual. But, I am also adamant about the fact that God leaves no doubt where He stands on this issue. Therefore, I have no option but to stand where He stands. If we want God’s blessing, we have to acknowledge His wants and commands as the deciding vote. We do no one any favors by condoning what, in the end, leads to disastrous consequences. If we truly love them, we don’t tell them it’s OK to live in a way that God says is not OK.
  2. Abortion is an issue that we all have very strong feelings about. I’d like to share my thoughts on that. Abortion is trying to take two wrongs and make a right. The first wrong is to become pregnant outside of God’s prescribed method. I would dare say that the cases of abortion in married couples is almost nil. The second wrong is to kill that baby at any point in the pregnancy as the answer to solving the first wrong. The emotional damage has to be catastrophic to a woman who has killed her own child. I find it hard to believe that a day goes by in the life of a woman, who has had an abortion, that she doesn’t grieve over the choice she made.

I would like to close with a heartfelt plea to you, as a person, to take that deeper look I talked about in the beginning of this letter. If we make America a better place to go to hell from, have we really done a good thing with our lives? If we point people to a broad road that leads to hell, have we really done a good thing with our lives? If America’s motto becomes “majority rules: regardless of moral implications” have we really done a good thing with our lives?

The Westminster Catechism says that the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We can’t glorify Him without obedience to His revealed will. If our own nation, founded with such promise, turns on Him in the end, have we really done a good thing with our lives?

With utmost respect and with an earnest prayer for God’s leadership in your life
