Lord's Day Thought 19th June 2011

Many people make a serious error when they come to interpret a Biblical passage, by starting off with what they think they know and reading the Bible in line with their thinking. We should always start with what the Bible actually teaches, and allow that to form the basis of our understanding.

For example, in understanding Genesis 1, we should always start with what the Bible says rather than with what man and science says. We should start with:

“In the beginning, God created...” Genesis 1:1

If we fail to do this, then the whole of our understanding on how the universe begun, will be clouded with error instead of truth.

“....Thy word is truth” John 17:17

Having a correct understanding based upon the word of God as a foundation, is absolutely essential when we come to study the end times (Biblical eschatology) If we start with what we think we know, or what others have said or written, almost always we will be going down the road of error.

“Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?”       John 21:21

“Jesus saith unto him......What is that to thee? Follow thou me.”                John 21:22b

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to apply the word to everybody else? We can sit in a meeting, listening to the preaching of the word, and think “What a great message for Mrs. Jones! I hope she is taking it in” Or we could be reading the Bible and think “That's a great passage for Tom, I really think he should be reading this” Yet the Holy Spirit is saying, “This is for YOU!” We can be so pre-occupied with what we think would be good for others, while God is trying to catch our attention!

The same thing happened to King David. God sent Nathan to David with a parable (2 Samuel 12) It told of a rich man taking a poor man's only ewe lamb, and killing it to feed a traveler, instead of taking one of his own lambs from among his many. The story made David very angry, “How dare the rich man treat the poor man in this way, he should be punished severely” (V5) Yet this parable was meant for King David himself! It was God showing David His displeasure, at him taking another man's wife and sending him into the front line of battle to get killed.

Nathan, turning to David, said to him “THOU ART THE MAN!” (V7) Although this led David to repentance, which was the reason he wrote that lovely Psalm 51, it cost him dearly. Even when we have the forgiveness of God and His cleansing in the blood of Jesus, we still have to face the consequences of our actions. But, we should never confuse the consequences with unforgiveness. God always forgives the truly repentant heart, but the consequences of our actions often remain.

“For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry” Hebrews 10:37

If you are a true believer in our Lord Jesus Christ, and you are reading this on Sunday Morning 22nd May 2011, then it proves yet another failed date setting prophecy from the pen of an apostate false teacher. Check it out on the Internet:

although I wouldn't be surprised if this site has not mysteriously vanished over night!

According to this fellow, Harold Camping, Judgement day was yesterday and the rapture of the Church happened yesterday, Saturday May 21st. He made this bold statement:

THE GREAT AMOUNT OF BIBLICAL SIGNS AND PROOFS ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE THAT JUDGMENT DAY WILL BEGIN ON MAY 21st THIS YEAR.

It is so sad that people, probably well meaning people, ignore the warnings in the Bible and set dates for our Lord's coming. This practise does great damage to Biblical Eschatology (The study of the end times) because it makes the prophetic word of God a laughing stock in the eyes of men. Jesus wants us to know the season of His coming, (Matt. 16:3) but the exact date is hidden from us for very good reasons.
